This installation was installed in 1997 in one of the cells of the women’s jail – No 4, Old Fort, Johannesburg.

The Old Fort now forms part of the complex of Constitution Hill, where the Constitutional Court is held. Women, arrested for their political activism, were held in these forbidding cells.
