The Remains

The work, Eugene Terre’Blanche and his Side-Kicks was bought by the South African National Gallery (now the Iziko South African Museum), but the first time it was exhibited, on the New Acquisitions Exhibition, six members of the AWB, the Afrikaner Weerstand Beweging, a pro-apartheid, reactionary group, went into the gallery with hammers and destroyed it.

They were arrested and appeared later in court. There was so much publicity about the incident that I decided to make another art work from the broken remains.

Tiles covered with photocopied newspaper excerpts and cartoons relating to the smashing of the sculpture Eugene Terre’Blanche and his Side-Kicks at the Iziko South African Art Gallery by five AWB members in 1991 are visible under the broken pieces of the sculpture.
